Drum, more than a simple instrument
What do you feel when you are listening to or playing drums? Does the sound permeate your brain, your heart follows the beat, and then the rhythm vibrates in your soul?
The heartbeat of african communities
Drums are a gem, and they have a deeper symbolic, and historical significance in Africa. They are a powerful tool of storytelling as the rhythm can recount the history of a tribe, celebrate important events, or pass down oral traditions and legends. Drums have the ability to transcend language barriers, they can also inspire passion and excitement and they can even make the drummer or listener go into a trance state.
Not only Djembè
Drums are percussion instruments. In Africa there are so many different types of drums:
- The djembe is the most famous African drum and it originated from the Malian empire. Its name means “gather in peace”.
- Talking drums: they are called “talking” as they can mimic human speaking. This makes it possible to send a custom message very far, like communicating from a village to another.
The drums can be both musical instruments and everyday objects with simple but monumental form.
Everything has its roots in Africa
African drumming has a rich and ancient history and still has a cultural influence all around the world. The tamborim, agogô, and cuíca used in the samba have African roots. Even in the reggae music you can hear the African imprint: drums are the first thing you hear most of the time.
When the beat mean rebellion
Even when Africans were deprived of everything, even if they were taken miles away from home, the tam tam of drums managed to follow them. Once in a new world, enslaved Africans kept their heritage alive through drumming.
Did you know that on different occasions enslaved African would use the beat of the drum to start a rebellion? The Haitian Revolution and the Stono rebellion started that way. That's why in some Caribbean Islands and in America drums were banned.
